How the Palestinians Refer to Israel

Despite signing the Oslo Accords in 1993 in which they agreed to recognize Israel, the Palestinian press and Palestinian people have not shown even the faintest sign of recognition. Until 1994, the “moderate” Fatah faction referred to Israel, as Hamas does today, as the “Zionist entity.” From then until now, official policy is to refer to Israel as “the Other Side.”

A senior Palestinian security official admitted that the policy came directly from the office of Yasser Arafat. “Yes, we signed an agreement that recognizes Israel, but most of our officers and policemen still have a real problem mentioning the name Israel,” he said.
Palestinian media refers to Jaffa, Haifa, Acre, Tiberias, Ramle and Lod as “Palestinian Cities” or “Occupied Cities.” Jews living west of the Green Line are sometimes referred to as “Settlers.”

Israel is often termed the “State of Occupation” and the Israeli Government is described as the “Government of Occupation.”
The prime minister of Israel, regardless of his identity or political affiliation, is called the “Prime Minister of Occupation” or “Prime Minister of Tel Aviv.” The Israeli Defense Minister is the “Minister of War.” The only mission of the IDF, always referred to as the “Occupation Forces,” is to kill Palestinians, destroy their homes and turn their lives into misery.

Arab citizens of Israel are referred to as “the Arabs of the Inside” — implying that the “inside” is actually an internal part of “Palestine” — “the Arabs of 1948”, “Palestinians Inside the Green Line” or “Arabs inside the 1948 Occupied Territories.”

Jews visiting the Temple Mount are regularly described as “Herds of Settlers” and “Settler Terrorist Gangs.”

Such language exposes the truth: that for many Palestinians, the real “occupation” began with the creation of Israel in 1948.
