Bomb Blast Kills 60 Dead in Yemen

A suicide bomber drove his vehicle into a gathering of new recruits at an army camp in northern Aden. Sixty people were killed and 29 wounded. The recruits were at a staging area near two schools and a mosque where they were registering to join the army.

Aden is the temporary base of Yemen’s Gulf-backed government. A wave of bombings and shootings targeting officials and security forces have taken place by jihadists from Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, which have both taken advantage of the chaos in Yemen to make gains in the southern regions.

Yemeni authorities have trained hundreds of soldiers in Aden over the past two months as part of operations to retake provinces from jihadists.

An Arab coalition, which backs the Yemeni government against Iran-backed rebels, has intervened in Yemen last year and helped government troops push the rebels out of Aden and four other southern provinces. But they have been struggling to secure these provinces.

As the civil war continues to rage in Yemen between the Saudi-led coalition against Shiite rebels, at least 9,000 have been slain since the beginning of violence in 2015.
