In Baltimore, protesters came on a cold afternoon to protest an officer-involved shooting. The protester, whose identity has not been revealed, also brought her 1-year-old daughter.
During the protests, the woman tried to get warm by entering a local pizzeria with her baby. She then went back outside to join the protest. The women then re-entered a second time saying that her baby was having trouble breathing. Customers called 911 to get medical assistance.
Keeping an eye on the protesters when he got the call, Major Richard Gibson, the Baltimore Police Northern District Commander, happened to be on patrol. The officer rushed into the restaurant and administered CPR for several minutes until paramedics arrived. Sadly, the young girl was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
However, onlookers many of whom were protesters saw Gibson in action and his efforts were not lost on them. “It was unbelievable. He's a very good man, to do what he’s done. You know don’t care about the people [outside], just take care of the baby,” said Antonio Romeo, the owner of the pizzeria. “I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He’s done a very good job. I’m sorry the baby lost her life,” said Romeo.
Police say Maj. Gibson is very involved in the community. He and the officers reportedly ordered pizza for the protesters after the incident happened,
At this time the cause of the baby’s death is unclear. It is also unclear if she had any pre-existing medical conditions.
