At about 7:30 a.m. local Somali time, an attacker driving a vehicle full of explosives rammed his vehicle into the main entrance of the port in
Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. There are at least 20 dead and 15 injured from the explosion.
Police officers working in the port's customs and tax office were targeted according to Somali Police Officer Major Ahmed Ibrahim, CNN reported. The explosion was followed by heavy gunfire.
Emergency responders rushed the wounded to hospitals and it is believed that the death toll will rise since many of the injured sustained critical wounds.
A group called Al Shabaab that has ties to Al Qaida, took responsibility for the attack which they said killed 30 officers according to Radio Andalus, a station affiliated with Al Shabaab.
The amount of deaths claimed by Al Shabaab has not been confirmed by other authorities or CNN and may have been inflated by the terror group.
