Fabrice Leggeri from France is the head of the EU Border Control Agency, Frontex. German papers quoted him saying that about 180,000 people came to Europe via Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean and 170,000 came across through the central Mediterranean route from Egypt and Libya.
These numbers are far smaller than the number from 2015 when over a million people arrived in Europe. This is thanks to a deal the EU struck with Turkey reducing the number of migrants coming through and entering from there. However migration from northern Africa rose 30%.
One grim statistic that went up is that last year about 3,600 people died on the Mediterranean and as of last month already 4,636 people died and the year isn’t over yet.
