Why should he believe the first testament and its prophets altogether?
There is historical basis to our believing in the Torah, the words of the prophets and their divinity. The Torah as opposed to all other religious books describes a divine revelation before an entire nation. In Deuteronomy (Ch.4) G-d Himself describes this difference: “When you ask about the first days before you from the day G-d created man on the earth, from end of the world to the other, was there ever such a great thing like this or was it ever heard? Was there any other nation that heard the words of G-d from within the fire as you heard and lived? Did G-d attempt to take one nation out from another with signs and miracles, war and with a strong hand and outstretched arm as the Lord your G-d did for you in Egypt before your eyes? You were shown to know that The Lord is G-d, there is none but Him.”
The reason we know Moses was a true prophet and that the Torah is a prophetic book from the Creator of the world Himself is in the great revelation of G-d before our entire nation at Mount Sinai and for 40 years in the desert. Before that we witnessed the great miracles we saw in Egypt including the plagues and the splitting of the sea. G-d Himself proved to us that he created the world and that he is not a person.
Maimonides writes in his famous “Yemen Letter”: “This great thing that was actually seen in reality and testified upon by choice witnesses which was unprecedented nor will it be repeated was: One nation in its entirety heard the Word of G-d and saw His honor eye to eye and this thing strengthens our faith so strong that He will never change it and from Him will come only the truth to stand us on our feet and not to let our certainty stumble.”
The Malbim also writes in the his commentary on the Torah (Exodus 19,9): G-d wanted the giving of the Torah to be widely publicized with a mighty multitude of 600,000 adult males besides women and children and the elderly, and they handed down the legacy of this reception (of the Torah) that they saw with their own eyes to their children after them till the last generation. Therefore anyone who will get up and say he is a messenger from G-d to give the Torah to the nation, we will tell him: any Torah given from G-d without such wide publicity as before is not Torah and all the more so if he comes to negate the Torah we received from Moses.”
